Red Tip Cocopum is easily near the top of the list of most popular and attractive tropical landscape plants. This versatile and easy to grow shrub is native to Florida, the Caribbean, tropical South America and Africa. It is widely cultivated and naturalized across many other locations with tropical climates.

Cocoplum is a tropical, evergreen, salt tolerant shrub that grows along ditches, canals, hammocks, coastal dunes and beaches in it's native habitat, making it especially useful to control beach erosion and in seaside landscapes. This attractive shrub with dark green, leathery textured, nearly round and slightly notched elliptical leaves will reach a mature height of about 12 to 15 feet if left untended. However, its dense, tight growth habit makes it easy to trim, shape and maintain at a lower height and in neat, straight, hedge rows, making for excellent hedge rows , backdrop, and boundary plantings. The new growth that then emerges across the top of the hedge is a bright, bronze red is attractive and showy.

This plant is a favorite landscape staple and is a frequent choice of commercial landscape architects for tropical and oceanside resorts and developments.

The Cocoplum does bloom and also produces a bland, but edible fruit. However, it is primarily grown for the bright red color in the new growth as the greenish white flowers are small and nondescript. The rounded purple to white, fleshy fruit has a slightly sweet, unique berry like flavor and was used by Native Americans and early settlers to make jams and jelly. The seeds were also roasted and eaten, or crushed and added to the jelly. The fruit is a favorite of gopher tortoises, birds, and other wildlife.

Direct planting of 4 inch starter size plants is not recommended, so for the best results with your new plant, we recommend it be repotted and allowed to grow larger before setting out in a tropical to subtropical landscape.

When the new pot has filled with roots and the plant is larger, then here a few hints for successful growing in the landscape in Zones 9, 10, and 11.  Cocoplum can be grown as a potted plant indefinitely.

  • Plant in fertile, slightly acidic soil. Amend with high quality compost as needed

  • Locate in full sun to very light shade.

  • Plant early in the season.

  • Apply a good quality slow release plant food with the initial planting and yearly thereafter.

  • Supply supplemental irrigation until well established and during the dry season thereafter.

  • Protect from frost and freeze. Even brief exposure to temps below 32ºF can damage folIage.
