Juanulloa mexicana or aurantica is a rare and uncommon colorful blooming vine-like tropical epiphyte shrub that is native to South America, and an absolute must have for any tropical plant collector or gardener (like me) who is drawn to the different and exotic. It's home outside of the native rainforest habitat is typically in a botanical garden or conservatory.

This plant is commonly called the Goldfinger Vine or Goldfinger Bush as the bloom resemble bright golden orange gloved fingers beckoning provocatively from between large, lush, deep green, leathery leaves. The flowers are exciting and different from start to finish. The bud is a brilliant 2 inch, round, almond shaped, pointed, waxy brilliant gold orange calyx from which a darker reddish orange bell shaped tubular flower emerges. The flowers are born in hanging racemes.

The flower only last a few days, but the bright orange waxy calyx lingers for weeks. The flowers are not only offer everything we associate with the tropics, such as; rich and appealing color, exotic and enthralling beauty, but also produce abundant nectar that attracts many birds, and especially the hummingbirds.

Juanulloa is generally fast growing, and evergreen in the tropics, but will drop the leaves and go dormant in cool (but not freezing) weather, and resprout when the nights begin to warm.

For the best results with the Goldfinger Vine:

  • Start out with it as a potted plant and wait to give it permanent location until you become familiar with it's growth habit, care and needs.
  • Plant in a loose, well draining, fertile orchid type media (remember it's an epiphyte, ie, It grows in the trees in it's native habitat
  • Maintain consistent moisture but avoid over watering. (Treat it much as you would an orchid)
  • Keep it warm. Maintain temperature above 50ºF for the earliest flowering and to avoid dormancy.
  • Feed a good quality bloom boosting slow release fertilize with the initial planting and yearly thereafter. Supplement with water soluble food in between. Do not feed during dormancy.
  • Pot it out early in the season in cooler zones so it has a full summer to acclimate before heading indoors for the winter. Get it inside early, as soon as the nights begin to fall out of the 60ºs.
  • Protect from frost and freeze, even when dormant.
