Kleims Hardy Gardenia is a beautiful, fabulously fragrant gardenia developed by JC Raulston in North Carolina specifically to fill the need for a more cold hardy gardenia cultivar, and they did an excellent job!  This cultivar matures at 2 to 3 feet in height, is evergreen with attractive dense deep green leathery foliage.  It produces profuse large single white flowers that are intensely fragrant throughout the summer and intermittently until the first frost.  As an added plus, it can be planted in the full sun, and will also perform very well in the more temperate climates.  It is an excellent choice for borders, paths and walkways where the heavenly fragrance can be most enjoyed.

It has a fairly high degree of natural nematode resistance, and grows well on it's own roots.

The limbs make beautiful long lasting cut flower arrangements.  The classic, elegant flowers are excellent choices for corsages and bridal bouquets as well.  Additionally they may be grown in pots and brought inside as the bloom begins to open.  Place near a southern window or provide full supplemental full spectrum light for the best and longest bloom indoors.  Return outdoors once bloom is done.

Kleims Hardy Gardenia prefers fertile, well drained soil in the full sun.   For peak performance and bloom it should be maintained uniformly moist, but will withstand periods of drought once well established, though vigor and bloom may suffer.  Take care not to crowd and allow adequate air circulation for the fullest bush.  Some cold protection such as heavy mulch is recommended in the colder zones.

Direct planting of 4 inch starter size plants is not recommended, so for the best results with your new plant, we recommend it be repotted and allowed to grow larger before setting out in a tropical to subtropical landscape.

When the new pot has filled with roots and the plant is larger, then here a few hints for successful growing in the landscape in the recommended zones.  Gardenias can be grown as a potted plants indefinitely.

  • Plant in fertile well draining, slightly acidic soil soil in the full sun. Amend with high quality organic material as needed.
  • Locate in full sun to very lightly dappled shade.
  • Provide supplemental irrigation.
  • Feed a good quality, slow release, bloom boosting fertilize with the initial planting and twice yearly in the early Spring and early Fall thereafter.
  • Supplement with a water soluble plant food in between feeding.
  • Prune lightly and often when young to encourage branching and after flowering to promote uniform shape and control size.
  • Plant early in the season in Zones 5, 6, and 7 and mulch heavily.
