Stephanotis Vine is a tropical vine that is native to Madagascar, Cuba, China, Japan and the Malabar Peninsula.  It is also known as Bridal Wreath, Bridal Veil or Madagascar Jasmine.

It is commonly called a jasmine due to the similar intoxicating fragrance, but it is a member of the Apocynaceae family and is not a true jasmine.

The variegated cultivar, Stephanotis Variegata is more rare, harder find, and not as widely cultvated as the green leaved cultivar, Stephanotis floribunda.  Both varieties share the waxy, tubular, long lasting flowers that are common to the species, and are highly fragrant.   However the leaves of the variegated type are showy and attractive and add light, texture and interest, especially in shaded areas,  even when the plant is not in bloom.

Stephanotis Vine is a tropical vine, and is not recommended for growing outdoors north of Zone 9.  It requires protection from cold if temperatures fall below 40°F.   This beautiful vine can be acclimated to grow full time indoors.

Flowers from the stephanotis are frequently used in wedding bouquets and leis.  The essential oil is a popular ingredient in high quality perfumes.

This is among our most popular gift items.

The Stephanotis Vine is not a plant we typically recommend to inexperienced or novice gardeners, as it can be a bit fussy in it's requirements, and requires a bit of extra attention and care.  However, the wonderful fragrance and long lasting flowers are well worth the effort required.

Stephanotis Vine will generally do quite well if the following conditions are closely monitored:

  • Plant in loose, well draining, fertile soil, rich in organic matter
  • Locate in lightly dappled shade
  • Maintain consistent moisture
  • Reduce watering during winter dormancy
  • Protect from temperatures below 45°F
  • Feed a good quality slow release bloom boosting plant food yearly in the Spring.
  • Avoid feeding when dormant.
  • Prune for fullness when young and actively growing
  • Do not prune when dormant.
  • Provide a trellis or other support.
  • Do not allow the plant to become excessively wet or dry.  Maintain conisent moisture when actively growing and consistently just damp media when dormant.
  • Avoid chilling.  Stephanotis are tropical and very sensitive to cold temperatures.
  • Delay ordering in cold climates until temps are well above freezing and holding to avoid shipping shock.
