Shrimp Plant Golden Yellow Unusual Tropical

10 reward points

Many of the plants commonly called Shrimp Plants are assigned to the Justicia genus, while others reside over in the cousins household of the Pachystachys.  Both groups are members of the Acanthaceae Family.  Attempting to determine the subtle differences that determined the placement of one and not another is a task we will leave for Taxonimists.

The Golden or Yellow Tropical Shrimp Plants are unique tropical flowering perennials with uniquely shaped, bright golden yellow colored shrimp shaped flowers.  They are fast growers with an open and loose habit that quickly forms a clump of long slender stems soon topped by 3 to 4 inch long, bright, golden yellow bracts. (Bracts are type of plant tissue that is not actually a flower, but a form of leaf tissue as is also seen in Poinsettias and Bougainvilleas).  The actual flower is then a white long tongue shaped pair of oval petals that extend out of the bright colored bract.  This bloom assembly resembles a large shrimp in shape..hence the common name.  Tropical Golden Yellow Shrimp Plant is an interesting and unique plant that once found and enjoyed, remains a favorite season after season.

Shrimp Plants are easy to grow.   They will spread by forming new plants when the stems grow long and become heavy.  New roots will easily form at any joint that touches the ground.   These can even be trained on trellises and fences by allowing the long stems to grow and then tying them to a support. They benefit from a regular pruning to control the tendency to open up and become leggy.   Shrimps work great in mixed perennial beds, borders or any other pot where you want a mass of continuous color.  The bloom cycle is long beginning in the early spring and lasting until early winter in tropical climates.  They lend great interest, texture and color and are nice in combination garden pots.
