WHITE CANDLES Shrimp Plant Unusual Tropical Shade Perennial

10 reward points

Tropical Shrimp Plants are a part of the Justicia species, which is very big, and has many interesting cultivars. Of those commonly called Shrimp Plants,  the red, and the bright yellow varieties are probably the most popular and best known, although the yellow is actually classed as a different species, it is very similar and shares the common name.

The White Candles Shrimp Plant grows in a clump of long slender stems that are topped by 3 to 4 inch long, pure white bracts. (Bracts are type of plant tissue that is not actually a flower, but a form of leaf tissue...also seen in poinsettias and bougainvilleas).  The actual flower is then a white long tongue shaped pair of oval petals that extend out of the bright colored bract.  This bloom assembly resembles a large shrimp in shape..hence the common name.  However, important to note the flowers of the White Candles Shrimp Plant are less shrimp-shaped than the red or yellow.  Nonetheless, it is an interesting and unique plant that once found and enjoyed, remains a favorite season after season.  Plan to allow a full season for White Candles Shrimp Plant to reach its full blooming potential.

Shrimp Plants are easy to grow.   They will spread by forming new plants when the stems grow long and become heavy.  New roots will easily form at any joint that touches the ground.

Plants benefit from a regular pruning to prevent legginess.   These can even be trained on trellises and fences by allowing the long stems to grow and then tying them to a support.  Shrimps work great in mixed perennial beds, borders or any other pot where you want a mass of continuous color.  The bloom cycle is long beginning in the early spring and lasting until early winter in tropical climates.

Note that branches of Shrimp Plants are brittle and break easily.  Some minor breakage during shipping and when handling to repot is common and often unavoidable.  These are tough resilient plants, so such breakage does not result in any permanent harm.  Lost leaves and branches are quickly replaced as the plant begins to acclimate and grow.
