Clerodendrum smithianum is commonly called Chains of Glory or Light Bulbs and is an attractive, fast growing, medium sized shrub, that offers a lovely cascading bloom habit with small white tubular shaped single flowers with long stamens that re their most interesting in the bud form, when they resemble a string of small light bulbs cascading down through the dark green pointed oval leaves. This somewhat rare and hard to find clerodendrum that not only offers a unique and interest flowering habit, but also blooms in the dead winter, which is rare for a tropical plant.

The flowers are long, pure white split tubular blossoms with pretty red stamens tipped with bright yellow pollen covered pistels that resemble small white butterflies. The blossoms are short lived, and lasting only a day or two at most. However it is the unique and interesting shape these pretty flowers have in the bud stage and the cascading habit of the flower stalk that makes this plant most appealing. The swollen bulb shaped buds hang from deep burgundy green sepals in horizontal rows circling long flexible stems at regularly spaced intervals

Chains of Glory or Light Bulbs is one of the more than 400 species of Clerodendrum and is native to tropical Africa.

This plant has dozens of interesting uses in almost any landscape. Although it is quite tropical and must be protected from frost and freeze, it adapts quite well to permanent potted culture, and so can be grown outside it's recommend zone range with adequate care and winter protection. It is pretty planted in mass, as a part of mixed perennial beds, or as an accent plant along well traveled. It can also be adapted to growing indoors with supplemental lighting and is a frequent choice for bonsai culture.
