DOUBLE YELLOW DATURA Devils Trumpet Thorn Apple Plant

12 reward points

Available Size

4 Inch Pots - Mature, well rooted starter size plants, growing and shipped in a 4 inch plastic pot, plant will be a minimum of about 4 to 6 inches tall and unlikely to have bloom or bud at the time of shipping.

The Datura metel is a lovely, beautiful and rewarding plant with stunningly beautiful flowers It should be grown strictly for ornamental uses with same cautions that would be used when growing amaryillis, oleanders, foxgloves, diffenbachia, or any of the other numerous beautiful, but toxic ornamental plants

The flowers of this particular plant are large doubled, upward pointing trumpets in soft pastel yellow, with a slight green edge in the bud stage, and fading to cream as they age. It grows large very quickly, easily becoming 5 to 6 feet tall with an equal spread in a single season, but remains full and bushy. It has a superior self branching somewhat horizontal growth habit that requires very little pruning or maintenance to achieve and maintain.

In the tropics it begins blooming early in the late spring and continues into the Fall until the nights cool and the days get short. Flowers last for 2-3 days. Bloom can be maximized and extended by removing seed pods before the ripen, as it is the general habit of the species, to grow vigorously during the warm season, produce seed, and enter dormancy from which it does not always emerge.

Seed pods are about the size of a golf ball, which is somewhat larger than the average for other Datura metels and are a bit oddly shaped with slightly blunted protrusions vs sharply defined thorn-like spines.

Grown from seed.

Direct planting of 4 inch pots into the landscape is not recommended, so for the best results with this plant, we suggest repotting and allowing it to grow a bit larger before setting it out. Once the new pot has filled with roots, here are a few helpful hints for successful growing in a tropical landscape. (Recommended Zone Range is 9 ,10, 11).

  • Plant in well draining soil. (It will tolerate a wide range of soils. Clay soils should be amended with organic matter)

  • Locate in full sun to light shade.

  • Plant in an area where children and pets do not have unsupervised access.

  • Feed a good quality slow release plant food wiith the initial planting and again in the next Spring.

  • Remove seed pods to prolong blooming and prune lightly after flowering to increase plant longevity.

  • Be prepared to replace this plant, either by collecting seed and growing another or simply purchasing a replacement within 1 to 3 years at most.

  • Supply supplemental irrigation, but take care not to overwater, especially in the winter.

  • Protect from frost and freeze.
