About Yellow Bird of Paradise Mandellas Gold:

Strelitzias, commonly called, Birds of Paradise, are one of the most favorite and popular tropical flowers.  The unique and usual bird shaped flowers have become a hallmark synonymous with all things exotic and tropical.   The most recognizable and widely grown flower is orange, with bright purplish blue accents.  It is also commonly called Crane Flower.

Yellow Bird of Paradise or Mandella's Gold is a particularly striking and usually colored Bird of Paradise cultivar developed at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens in Africa and released  in 1994.  Although spontaneous genetic mutations of the orange type had been previously discovered in France, California, Japan and in other South African Botanical Gardens, they were isolated specimens that were genetically unstable and could not be successfully reproduced.

After more than 20 years of of careful selection, and painstaking hand pollination, John Winter, who was the curator of the Garden at that time, developed a stable yellow cultivar that would come back true from it's seed.  It was originally introduced to the nursery trade as Kirtenbosch Gold and was later changed to Mandella's Gold in honor of Nelson Mandella in 1996.

This variety, dependably produces large, exotic, bird  shaped flowers with bright golden yellow petals and  purple spathes and a vivid blue accent petals.  The plant has broad banana like leaves in deep gray green, and reaches a mature height of about 4 ft tall.  The plant grows slowly when young, and will take some time to become established and mature enough to flower, but is well worth the wait.

The flowers are long lasting, taking several weeks to fully mature and reach their peak, so they are excellent for cut flower arrangements.  The plant is attractive and adds interesting texture and height even when not in bloom, and produces little to no leaf litter, making it a good choice for large garden pots for the porch, patio and poolside.
