Tropical Hibiscus Aussie Queen is an older, but not well known, hibiscus cutivar. It is one of a trio of plants introduced into commercial horticulture in the late 60's, commonly called Aussie Queen, Rose Queen and Snow Queen.  They are thought to be naturally occurring genetic mutations.  These types of spontaneous, naturally occurring changes that branch randomly from a hibiscus are called sports.

The flowers of the Aussie Queen Hibiscus are small red classic hibiscus flowers, and not very exciting on their own. However, they are set off by very unique and interesting foliage that is tri colored  in a white with a splattered pattern of green and pink.

Hibiscus Aussie Queen grows more slowly than many hibiscus, and is one of only a few that will bloom in light shade. It is lovely in a mass planting, and can be pruned to grow low and flat, making it an interesting variation in traditional bedding applications. It makes wonderful potted specimens and accent plants, is a great anchor in large mixed garden pots. It has a low, lateral branching habit that makes it one of few hibiscus suited for large hanging baskets that does not require growth inhibitors to maintain size.

The coloration in the foliage of Aussie Queen is similar to Rose Queen, but shows much more white and pink. The green is a lighter shade. The overall effect is more muted and delicate.

Left unpruned, Aussie Queen will reach a mature height of about 2 ft to 2.5 ft., but is easy to maintain at lower heights. Frequent pruning is beneficial and helps the plant grower bushier and stronger.
