For those that appreciate the romantic and historical connections to the past provided by our gardens, there could be no better choice than the Jasmine officinale, as this plant has been cultivated and enjoyed all over the world for so many centuries that it's original origin is unknown.  It is believed to have originated somewhere in Central Asia, based on references to it contained in ancient Chinese texts. Modern texts consider it native to the, Europe, Himalayas, Napal, China, Iran, India, Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is the national flower of Pakistan. This plant is an antique heirloom plant in every sense of the description.  Romantic stories, legends and traditions that reference the jasmine plant cross many centuries and cultures, the fragrance has a unique ability to add another dimension to an experience or a memory.  Most who experience this sublime fragrance can recall with uncanny clarity, the moments in time, the places and the people.

It is known by several common names, including Poets Jasmine, Spanish Jasmine, Perfume or French Perfume Jasmine, Hardy Jasmine, Yeh-hsi-ming, Jadimalli, and Pitchy-poo.

Jasmine officinale is a vigorous growing, twining climber with sharply pointed pinnate leaves and clusters of pure white star-shaped, wonderfully fragrant flowers. Although there is debate between botanists, grandiflorum, is generally thought to be a superior selected sub-cultivar of true officinale, while others believe it to be hybrid

Regardless, this jasmine is a wonderfully enjoyable and rewarding plant to grow with a number of versatile uses in most any garden. It is also adapts well to indoor potted culture with adequate light.  There are few other plants that can make your garden as enjoyable and memorable to be in and near than this old, heirloom, true jasmine.

Officinale grandiflorum is the most cold hardy of the jasmines, with well established plants having the ability to survive cold temperatures into the high to mid 20sºF. The essential oil is a popular ingredient for perfumes and massage oils, and has a number of aroma therapy, folk, Eastern, and alternative medicinal uses.  The name officinale does not denote this being the 'offical' jasmine as one might assume, but is instead a reference to it's status in the perfume industry as a premium quality ingredient.

Plant a Jasmine Officinale Grandiflorum near a frequently used entrance, exit, or window that can be left open when it's blooming.  It's great for building living walls, covering a pergola or arbor, lining a fence or gracing a trellis, or it can simply be left to free flow and find it's own design in corner.

Direct planting of 4 inch starter size plants is not recommended, so for the best results with your new plant, we recommend it be repotted and allowed to grow larger before setting out in a tropical to subtropical landscape.

When the new pot has filled with roots and the plant is larger, then here a few hints for successful growing in the landscape in Zones 7, 8 9, and 10, and  can be grown as a potted plant indefinitely.

  • Plant in fertile well draining, slightly acidic soil soil in the full sun. Amend with high quality organic material as needed.
  • Locate in full sun to very lightly dappled shade.
  • Provide supplemental irrigation.
  • Feed a good quality, slow release, bloom boosting fertilize with the initial planting and twice yearly in the early Spring and early Fall thereafter.
  • Supplement with a water soluble plant food in between feeding.
  • Prune after flowering to encourage branching to promote uniform shape and control size. Avoid pruning in late spring, as it blooms on old growth.
  • Protect from frost and freeze until very well established.
  • Plant early in the season in Zones 7 and 8.
  • Reduce watering during winter dormancy.
  • Provide full spectrum light when growing indoors.
