The Rose Queen Hibiscus is a unique and unusual hibiscus cultivar in that it's leaves are more showy than the flowers, so you don't have to wait for flowers to have dramatic and eye catching color. The leaves are variegated colors of bronze, red, jade green, and bright rose pink, and are very showy and eye catching. Hibiscus Rose Queen blooms profusely throughout the year with the classic single red tropical hibiscus flower.

The Rose Queen Hibiscus is an old cultivar that has recently been rediscovered. As with many hibiscus, it's known by lots of alternative names; Red Hot, Fire and Ice, Checkered Hibiscus, Cooper's Variegated are a few. However, it's original registered name is Rose Queen.

The Rose Queen Hibiscus makes a show stopping mass planting, although care must be taken to surround it with other plants that compliment and do not compete, as these are so bright colored that they really do steal the show.

Care should be taken when placing them to avoid planting where red brick or red painted surfaces will be the direct background. However, the are absolutely stunning against white, yellow and blue. Rose Queen Hibiscus is attractive as an accent, anchor, or transitional plant, or can be maintained at about 12" to 18" for bedding applications. It's great for containers, especially patio container garden pots, wonderful in combo's with other green textures and yellows.

Unpruned mature height is about 5-6', but it is not as fast growing as most hibiscus and is easily maintained and contained at a lower level. It's natural growth habit is as a medium sized branched bush. However, it is easily trained into a small standard tree and makes a stunning patio pot.

Direct planting of plugs and starter pots is not recommend.  We suggest that starter plants be potted up and allowed to grow larger before setting out in the landscape.  When the new pot has filled with roots and the plants are ready to be set out, here are a few tips for successful growing:

  • Plant in well draining, fertile soil.
  • Locate in the full sun or lightly dappled shade.
  • Feed a good quality slow release bloom boosting plant food twice yearly
  • Prune for shape after flowering
  • Protect from frost and freeze
