4 Inch Pots - Mature, well rooted starter size plants, growing and shipped in a 4 inch plastic pot, plant will be a minimum of about 6 inches tall.

Gardenia Mystery is old heirloom Gardenia cultivar, that is among the most fragrant and easiest to grow, most popular and best loved Gardenias.  Large doubled bloom appear like clock work in the late spring on large, vigorous growing plants with dense, dark green foliage. The root system is resilient and resistant to nematodes, so it is one of a bare handful of non grafted gardenias that can survive in the southern landscape for generations.  It can even be grown successfully in Zone 11, with minimal nutritional supplementation to offset the typical alkaline soil conditions there.

If you have memories of a Gardenia stem given by neighbor or a friend, happily growing new roots in a jar of water on a sunny windowsill, it was likely this cultivar.  In days gone by Grandmothers, and Mothers of the Bride frequently rooted cuttings from their own plants to pass along so the new couple could enjoy the heavenly fragrance in their new home. The freshly rooted new plant was often seen gracing the gift or cake table sitting proudly in a fancy crystal glass eagerly awaiting it's journey to a new home.

Surpisingly there a great many of those plants who began life on sunny windowsill in the 40's, 50's, and 60's that are still thriving and blooming today.

The Mystery Gardenia will grow to be 6 to 10 feet tall and just as wide, if left to it's own devices. However, it is easily maintained by frequent pruning after it flowers, and so is also a good choice for potted culture.  However Gardenias are notoriously difficult to grow indoors, so when grown as potted plants they do best grown outdoors and just brought inside when they are flowering and then returned to the outdoor location when the bloom cycle is complete.   Adequate lighting is a must for successful overwinter outside the recommended USDA Zone Range.

When in flower, the limbs make beautiful long lasting cut flower arrangements.  The classic, elegant flowers are excellent choices for corsages and bridal bouquets as well.

This garden is a great gift choice for a gardener of any skill level, and is a frequent choice for Mother's Day, Weddings, and House Warming Gifts.

Direct planting of 4 inch starter size plants is not recommended, so for the best results with your new plant, we recommend it be repotted and allowed to grow larger before setting out in a tropical to subtropical landscape.

When the new pot has filled with roots and the plant is larger, then here a few hints for successful growing in the landscape in the recommended zones.  Gardenias can be grown as a potted plants indefinitely.

  • Plant in fertile well draining, slightly acidic soil soil in the full sun. Amend with high quality organic material as needed.
  • Locate in full sun to very lightly dappled shade.
  • Provide supplemental irrigation.
  • Feed a good quality, slow release, bloom boosting fertilize with the initial planting and twice yearly in the early Spring and early Fall thereafter.
  • Supplement with a water soluble plant food in between feeding.
  • Prune lightly and often when young to encourage branching and after flowering to promote uniform shape and control size.
  • Plant early in the season in Zones  7, 8 and 9A and mulch heavily well ahead of the first frost.
