Durantas have several common names, including Geisha Girl, Sky Flower, Pigeon Berry, Golden Dew Drop, and Golden Honey Drop or Fence Flower. Sapphire Showers is a selected cultivar of Duranta repens that produces very dark, blue toned purple flowers that are a bit larger, and more prominent than the common lavender type.

The dainty flowers in shades of lavender, purple or white are followed by hanging clusters of golden berries that are great bird food.

This plant lends itself well to pruning and trimming, and so has a nearly endless variety of uses, from small standard patio tree forms, neat hedge rows, rounded backdrops, or intricate topiary forms.

Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in full sun to light shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer initially and repeat annually in spring. Prune after flowering to control size and shape. Monitor for leaf spot in very hot, humid weather and treat appropriately as needed. Avoid locating in areas where children or pets have unattended access and could accidentally ingest berries.

Indoor Growing: This tropical plant grows large, requires the full spectrum of light 4 to 6 hours daily, high humidity, and warm temperatures with at least a 10°F day/night differential. So, not well-suited for the average indoor growing space.

Climate: Duranta repens is a semi-tropical plant. It is recommended for USDA Zones 8B, 9, 10, 11. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and do not consider other variables. Cold protection is recommended until plants are established.

Condition: This product is one (1) young, starter-sized plant intended for a gardener to grow to its mature size. You may expect a starter-size plant to be well-rooted, have a root zone of approximately 4 inches in diameter, be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall, and have no blooms or buds on arrival. It may be shipped with or without a pot, as appropriate.
