Hylocereus undatus, or Dragon Fruit, is a unique and unusual cactus-like succulent that produces a large, showy, greenish-white night-blooming fragrant flower, followed by a red-cased, edible, mildly sweet fruit. It is native to Central and South America, and is cultivated in many warm climate areas. The common name comes from the interesting scale-like patterned outer covering of the fruit.

The Dragon Fruit plant grows in long, pendulous succulent branches lined with moderately fine, soft spines. The growth habit is both lateral and upright. Dragon Fruit Plants are often anchored to sturdy supports and grown in small, upright tree form. The blooms are large saucer-size multi-petaled cups in shades of green tinted creamy white to pale ivory yellow. The flowers are large, lush, fragrant, and only open at night. Fruit begins to set about 30 to 50 days after flowering, and a mature plant may flower several times yearly.

Care: Plant Dragon Fruit in coarse, very well-draining soil in a full sun location. Water sparingly until well established. Plants are very drought-tolerant, so mature plants seldom need supplemental irrigation. They are also very self-sufficient and seldom need fertilizer, although some growers report that feeding water-soluble fertilizer high in potassium as plants begin to set fruit improves sweetness. Consider mature size when selecting the permanent planting location.

Indoor Growing: Due to mature size and requirements for very warm temperatures and high light, this plant is not recommended for growing indoors.

Climate: Dragon Fruits are tropical plants recommended for growing outdoors in Zones 9, 10, 11. Cold protection from frost and freezing is recommended in all Zones.

Condition: This product is one (1) young, starter-sized plant intended for a gardener to grow to its mature size. You may expect a starter-size plant to be well-rooted, have a root zone of approximately 4 inches in diameter, be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall, and have no blooms or buds on arrival. It may be shipped with or without a pot, as appropriate.
