DESERT ROSE Adenium obesum White Pink Flower Unusual Stalk

20 reward points

The Desert Rose (Adenium obseum) is a popular, unusual looking, tropical succulent plant that is native to the Africa and Arabia.

Gardeners everywhere fell in love with this plant in the early to mid 1980s when it began to make an appearance in the up and coming garden centers of the large chain stores. The eye chatching bounty of showy, long lasting, pink flowers and the fat, unusually shaped, bonsai like trunks stopped gardeners in their tracks.

The early introductions had flowers in tones of solid medium pink.  Over the next several years, hundreds of hybrids were developed with flowers of varying shades of pink, red and white, and were introduced with varying degrees of success, but as the chain store market matured and suppliers for the market began to gravitate toward plants that could be massed produced cheaply, brought to market with minimal labor and care, and shipped palletized on trucks, nationwide and year round, the beautiful Desert Rose, while still popular, was not suited, and so today, it has once become rare and hard to find.

Aside from the showy, long lasting flowers, one of the most interesting features of the Desert Rose is the fat bulbous shape of the trunk. Over time the trunk will enlarge, forming a bulb just above the surface of the soil. This feature, called a caudex, is a structure that holds extra water in reserve that the Desert Rose can use in times of severe drought.

The medium sized, bell bodied flowers with open, five petaled faces, typically begin to emerge in the early Fall and last for several weeks.

This plant grows slowly and takes time to mature and develop before reaching its full potential.

This particular cultivar produces flowers with white bodies that edged in bright, dark pink.  Hundred of hybrids have been developed, and many are available online.  However, use common sense and caution when ordering, especially from foreign or unknown sources.  Because this is a popular, high demand plant, it is also a frequent target for bogus, and scam offerings.

Its important to note that while the Desert Rose can be grown from seeds, the seed does not germinate readily or easily, and seedling plants often will display a very high degree of genetic variation.  Hybrids with unsual flower forms and color combinations are only grown by cuttings or tissue culture, not from seed.   No blue flowering form exists.

Tips for success with your new Desert Rose Plant:

Direct planting of 4 inch starter size plants is not recommended, so for the best results with your new plant, we recommend it be repotted and allowed to grow larger before setting out in a tropical landscape.  Please note this plant is suitable for growing planted in the ground only in very well draining locations in tropical climates.  It can be grown as a potted plant indefinitely.

  • Plant in very porous, well draining media.  A mix specificall formulated for succulents is recommended.
  • Locate in full direct light.
  • Take care not to over water.
  • Feed a good quality, slow release fertilize with the initial planting and yearly in the Spring thereafter.
  • Inspect regularly for any signs of pests or disease and treat accordingly.
  • Protect from frost and freeze.
  • Be patient.  This plant grows slowly and takes time to reach its full potential.
