Madagascar Palms are not palms at all, but are a semi-succulent species in the Apocynaceae Plant Family (Pachypodium lamerii) and aside from the slight resemblance in growth habit to palms (large trunk topped with foliage) they have more in common with cacti, other caudex and succulent plants. The Latin species name translates to swollen foot and refers to unusual swollen shape of the trunk.

As Madagascar Palms grow, the lower foliage sheds away leaving a canopy of thin, strap leaves, revealing a pale greenish silver toned trunk covered with semi-soft spikey thorns. They are a favorite selection for Bonsai culture, and make attractive large outdoor specimens as well as conventional indoor plants.

Mature plants produce a large cluster of lightly scented single white flowers in the crown of the canopy.
