Conocarpus erectus or Buttonwood is a large growing tree like tropical shrub whose native habitat is along the shorelines in the tropics and subtropics.

Buttonwood is the most frequently used common name, but it is also known commonly as Gray Mangrove, Florida Buttonwood, False Mangrove, Buttonbush, or Buttontree.

It is a dense, upright, spreading, multi-trunked shrub with pretty, thick, broad plates of thin scaled, gray to brown bark.

The trunk(s) tend to gnarl and twist with age, adding interest and character and making this tree an excellent choice for both garden and traditional bonsai culture. A nondescript bloom is followed by a clusters of interesting knobby button shaped seed pods.

There are 2 types; one with bright, medium green , hairless leaves, and this one(Silver Buttonwood) with the soft, gray, fine, downy haired, silvered leaves. Both are popular choices in the tropical landscape, and especially for seaside applications,.as the buttonwood is not only very pretty, it is highly salt tolerant, and will tolerate salt spray.

It is also a frequent choice for Bonsai culture.
