Neomarica gracilis (Walking Iris, Apostle Plant) is a graceful evergreen member of the Iridaceae (Iris) family. It earns its common name "Walking Iris" from the unique way new plantlets form where spent bloom stalks arch to the ground and root. The "Apostle Plant" moniker stems from the lore that it blooms only after a clump develops at least twelve leaves in reference to Twelve Apostles of Christianity.

The plant forms dense clumps of long, strap-like, dark green foliage, typically 1 to 2 feet (30-60 cm) tall, emerging from rhizomes. Elegant bloom stalks rise above the foliage, producing a continuous display of short-lived yet numerous, lightly fragrant flowers from late winter through spring, often peaking around Easter. Each iris-shaped bloom features pristine white petals beautifully accented by vibrant blue and striking reddish-brown or maroon markings near the center, bringing a calm brightness to shaded garden spaces.

Neomarica gracilis thrives in light to moderate shade with moist, well-drained, organically rich soil. It tolerates boggy conditions, making it excellent for pond edges, but avoid areas with standing water. This easy-to-grow perennial requires minimal care beyond occasional thinning to manage its spread, which can also be controlled by removing plantlets before they root.

Condition: This product is one (1) young, starter-sized plant intended for a gardener to grow to its mature size. You may expect a starter-size plant to be well-rooted, have a root zone of approximately 4 inches in diameter, be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall, and have no blooms or buds on arrival. It may be shipped with or without a pot, as appropriate.
