Tahitian Maid Tropical Heirloom Hibiscus Live Plant Delicate Pink White Pinwheel Flower Starter Size 4 Inch Pot

The Tropical Hibiscus Tahitian Maid is an old, uncommon, and largely forgotten early heirloom tropical hibiscus hybrid or cultivar. It is a slower-growing, showy-bloomer, with medium-sized, delicate, romantic, white flowers with an ombre overlay of strawberry to pastel pink. The slower growth rate and dense, upright habit make it well-suited for porch and patio potted culture.

The open, well-defined separation of the petals, long, gold pollen-tipped stamen, tendency to rapidly flatten and recurve dramatically as it opens, pink on white overlaid coloration, size, shape, and close spacing of the sharply serrated, pointed leaves speak to a long-lost and forgotten tropical island ancestry.

The flowers appear in distinct cycles that begin in early summer and repeat until mid-fall, and are short-lived, lasting only a day or two at most. It takes a few seasons to mature before reaching its full potential. It is more cold-sensitive and less tolerant of hot direct summer sun, high temperatures, and humidity than the average, and performs best as a well-tended potted plant. So, requires a bit more attention and monitoring than the average, but is a great acquisition for hobbyists and hybridizers interested in the early, historical varieties.

Care: When mature, plant in rich, fertile, well-draining, slightly acidic potting media in an area that is lightly shaded in the afternoon. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer initially and repeat annually in spring. Prune after flowering to control size and shape. Monitor regularly and treat any common hibiscus plant problems as necessary.

Indoor Growing: Exotic Tropical Hibiscus do not adapt easily to indoor growing environments due to their specific needs for light, humidity, and temperature fluctuations. Successful indoor cultivation requires significant modifications to an average growing space.

Climate: Tahitian Maid is a tropical variety of hibiscus that is more sensitive to cold than the average. It is recommended for outdoor growing within USDA Growing Zones 9B, 10, and 11. Cold protection is required in all zones for optimum appearance, earliest flowering, and best overall plant health.
