Sunkist is an old tropical hibiscus rosa senensis hybrid that is known by a number of alternate names: Mella Yellow, Sunblush, Sunglow, Sunburst, Tropic Dawn, Golden Blush, and Golden Dawn are a few.

It is an heirloom hybrid of unknown origin that appeared in the market in the 1960s-1970s and is believed to be the result of a spontaneous genetic mutation from a plant with single rose-toned orange flowers. Such genetic mutations are common to the Hibiscus rosa senensis species, and are called 'sports'.

The flowers of Sunkist are classic five-petaled hibiscus singles of solid golden yellow with a pronounced rosy red striated blush radiating from the center. The blooms are short-lived, lasting just a day or two, and are slightly recurved, with long, solid yellow pollen-tipped stamens. The tone and saturation of the rosy blush vary based on weather conditions, with the red color becoming more prominent when temperatures are cooler. The bush grows tall and open with a slightly weeping habit, and is a cyclical bloomer that requires a few seasons to become fully mature and reach its full flowering potential. When mature, it blooms prolifically in repeating cycles.

Condition: One (1) well-rooted, starter-size plant with an approximate 4-inch-diameter root zone. Plant will be a minimum of about 6 to 12 inches tall and have no blooms or buds on ar
rival.
