MANDARIN HAT Cup and Saucer Vine Semi-Tropical Rare Unusual Red

12 reward points

Holmskioldia sanguinea or Mandarin Hat Vine is a little known,  very attractive and unusual tropical plant that is native to tropical and semi tropical Asia.  It is not a true vine, as it does not put out tendrils that will wrap and climb a support.  Instead its growth habit is very loose, open and vine like in that it puts out very long streaming branches that can be tied and trained to trellises or other supports.  The flower (well, actually it is a type tissue called a bract) begins as a bright copper orange and deeps to scarlet blood red as the bloom ages. The botanical name sanguinea is from the latin word for blood.  Chinese Hat and Cup and Saucer Vine are also common names.

The flowers (bracts) are tightly clustered along the branch and resembles an upside down Chinese hat or cup in a saucer.  It will bloom several times yearly with the heaviest bloom appearing in the late spring and fall.

If you long for the look of Bougainvilleas but can't deal with the thorns, or don't have adequate light, then the Mandarin Hat VineI is an excellent alternative.  Its growth habit is very similar, but it has no thorns and will bloom in areas that are too shaded for Bougainvilleas.
There are other colors of the species, including an orange and yellow.  However, the red is the most sought after, and hardest to find.

Mandarin Hat Vine is very attractive along a fence or wall where it can cascade over and provide a nice splash of bright color from either view.

It is easy to grow, is vigorous and establishes quickly.  Plant it in well drained soil.  Feed a good quality slow release fertilize 2 yearly and prune aggressively after bloom is finished, in the spring and periodically thru the summer.  It benefits from frequent pruning, producing denser, thicker foliage.  A stunning semi tropical and definitely a must have for those who want something a little different.
