Schizopetalus is species of tropical hibiscus native to Zanzibar and coastal Africa. It was introduced into commercial production in the early 1900s, and gardeners and collectors were soon enamored with the frilly split petals and usually long, trailing stamens of the unique frilly flowers. The dense tall growing bush will mature at about 8 to 12 feet tall, and has bright green serrated pointed oval leaves

Ir requires little more than having the basic needs of bright, direct light, adequate irrigation, protection from cold and minimal nutrition to thrive.

Schizopetalus is a favorite of hibiscus collectors and hybridizers, but is often difficult to find, as it is seldom grown commercially now. The species has a lot in common with Hibiscus rosa sensis, which is the most common and best known type of Tropical Hibiscus. The pollen is compatible and so, Schizopetalus is often used as a parent plant by hybridizers to develop Tropical Hibiscus.
