Augusta rivalis a/k/a Alibertia Belize, commonly called Needle Flower and White Shooting Star Plant, is a somewhat rare and lesser-known species with many interesting and attractive features.

It is easy to grow, is fragrant, and attracts pollinators, especially the Hawk Moth. It blooms continuously through the warm season with lightly fragrant tubular white flowers. Matures as a medium-sized, upright, bushy shrub at about 4-5 feet tall.

Suggested uses are as a low hedge or mass planting, as a mid-layer or background in layered beds, incorporated into mixed perennial beds, or as an accent or large potted plant.

Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in a full sun to lightly shaded area. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter. Prune after flowering to maintain size and shape.

Indoor Growing: This tropical requires the full spectrum of light 4 to 6 hours daily, high humidity, and warm temperatures with at least 10°F day/night differential, so it is not well-suited for the average indoor growing space.

Climate: This is a tropical plant and is recommended for growing in USDA Zones 9, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and do not take factors such as humidity, rainfall, or day/night temperature variations into consideration. Every growing environment has unique challenges.

Condition: One (1) Well rooted, starter size plant w/ 4 inch diameter root zone. Plant will be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall and unlikely to have bloom or bud at the time of shipping. May be shipped bare, wrapped root ball w/o pot.
