The Black Knight Buddleia has been one of the most successful cultivars within its species. This bush was accorded the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 1993 and has remained a popular butterfly plant since. It's big, full, scented blooms emerge in late Spring to early Summer in deep shades of purplish blue, appearing almost black at times.
The bush has the classic, graceful arching growth habit and produces vibrant, very dark purple nectar-rich flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Black Knight Buddleia flowers can also be found peeking out of fresh flower arrangements at times, adding a sense of mystery and elegance to many displays.
While Buddleias are an excellent nectar source for adult Butterflies, they are not hosts. A balanced Butterfly habitat should also include other varied species of host plants.
Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in full sun to light shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer initially and repeat annually in spring. Prune after flowering to control size, shape, and remove seed. Hybrid buddleias are typically infertile and do not set scant viable seeds. Nonetheless, we recommend pruning spent flowers to eliminate the risk of spread beyond the intended planting area.
Indoor Growing: This tropical plant grows large, requires the full spectrum of light 4 to 6 hours daily, high humidity, and warm temperatures with a minimum 10°F day/night differential. Therefore, it is not well-suited for the average indoor growing space.
For Temperate Climates. Recommended for USDA Zones 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Generally well-established plants freeze to the ground and resprout in the Spring in Zones 5, 6, and 7. Elsewhere, it typically remains evergreen, but enters a winter resting phase. Plant early in the season and protect from freezing until well established.
Grower Notes: The states of Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Hawaii have concerns regarding the invasiveness of Buddliea davidii species plants. While we grow only non-invasive hybrids and do not grow the species, we do not ship Buddleias to those states out of an abundance of caution.
Condition: One (1) Well rooted, starter size plant w/ 4 inch diameter root zone. Plant will be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall and unlikely to have bloom or bud at the time of shipping. May be shipped bare, wrapped root ball w/o pot.
