The Bi-Color Buddleia was hybridized at a prominent southern agricultural university in 1999. It is a hybrid of Buddleia weyeriana and has become one of the most popular Butterfly Bushes in the US and UK. It is typically sold in the US as 'Bi-Color' and in the UK as 'Flower Power'. The bush has the classic growth habit of the species, ie, growing lanky and upright with arching, flexible stems. It's the multi-hued butterfly magnet flowers and manageable growth habit that make it unique.
Big, full, scented blooms emerge in late spring to early summer. They open as a solid blue-toned lavender body and transition over several days through multi-shades of pink, peach, and purple as the bloom ages.
Bi-Color Buddleia is a suitable landscape element for any garden or wildlife habitat, as it is a non-invasive sterile hybrid that produces little to no viable seed. The nectar-filled flowers are an excellent food source, but the plant is not a preferred host.
Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in a full sun to lightly shaded area. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants will become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter. Prune after flowering to control size, shape, and remove seed pods. Protect young plants from very hot direct sun and be sure they do not dry out while becoming established.
Indoor Growing: This plant grows large and requires the full spectrum of light, 4 to 6 hours daily, high humidity, and warm temperatures with at least 10°F day/night differential and a mild chilling period during winter to produce flowers, so they are not well-suited to be grown indoors.
Climate: Buddleias are recommended for USDA Zones 6, 7, 8, 9. Generally, well-established plants freeze to the ground and resprout in the Spring in Zones 6 and 7. Elsewhere, it retains leaves, but goes through a semi-dormant resting phase. Plant early in the season and protect from cold until established.
Sterile non-invasive hybrid Buddleias are not subject to any shipping restriction to the best of our knowledge. However, in an abundance of caution, we do not ship any plants of the Buddleia species to Washington State, Oregon, Utah, Arizona, or Hawaii.
Growers' Note: A balanced butterfly habitat should include a range of both nectar sources and host plants.
Condition: One (1) Well rooted, starter size plant w/ 4 inch diameter root zone. Plant will be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall and unlikely to have bloom or bud at the time of shipping. May be shipped bare, wrapped root ball w/o pot.
