Pyracantha coccinea or Scarlet Firethorn is a spectacularly versatile shrub that in known for its vibrant red berries. This highly thorned plant may be grown as an excellent boundary hedge that will add beauty to the landscape when covered with berries throughout Winter. Scarlet Firethorn makes an appearance in many retail centers during the holiday season as its bright red berries provide seasonal cheer all Winter long.

Pyracantha's red berries are very appealing to many bird species and will likely draw a crowd of beautiful birds shortly after blooming. When acquired as a young plant, Scarlet Firethorn can be trained to create stunning freestanding espaliers. Soft stems can be formed to grow upwards in a variety of designs and will hold their shape as stems become woody over time. Pyracantha can grow up to 18 feet in height, though it is most commonly pruned as a shorter hedge to maintain fullness near the bottom.
