Plants in the Clusia genus are native across a large range of tropical locations extending from the east coast of Florida and southern Mexico to Brazil, and are found in rainforests and coastal scrubs. The genus holds about 300-400 species whose classifications and 'native' status determinations are changed frequently. Experts seem to mostly agree that Clusia rosea is/was originally native to some parts of coastal Florida. What the experts do not agree on is the official nativeness of the select cultivars and spontaneous seedling hybrids of the species currently cultivated for ornamental use. We will leave that debate for the experts to resolve.
Setting the official 'native' status aside, Clusia rosea 'Nana' or Dwarf Pink Clusia, commonly called The Autograph Tree or Pitch Apple, is an odd, quirky plant with thick paddle-shaped leaves and an interesting growth habit. It is a hemiepiphyte, which means it starts its life clinging to rocks, trees, or other plants and then extends long aerial roots into the soil as it matures. The common name 'Autograph Tree' relates to the leaves holding on to any marks that scar the surface. Folklore holds that the leaves and trunks were once used for playing cards, maps, and path markers, as carved names or initials remain visible for the life of the tree or until the leaves drop.
The plant is very drought-tolerant once established, resulting from a unique ability to exchange carbon dioxide at night (CAM metabolism), which allows it to conserve water during the day. This, along with its salt tolerance, makes it well-suited for seaside and coastal landscapes. Its short trunk and wide habit result in dense hedge rows and barrier plantings.
Dwarf Pink Clusia is primarily grown for its unique trunk and leaves, but pretty, waxy pink and white flowers may appear randomly in the warmest climates. These are followed by a small, fleshy, non-edible fruit that is attractive to wildlife. The common name 'Pitch Apple' relates to the sticky latex sap within the fruit and stems, which was once used as a waterproofing compound in boat building.
Care:
When mature, plant in coarse, porous, slightly alkaline, sandy soil in full sun to very light shade. Use caution when planting near trees due to the tendency for the aerial roots to wander. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture until established. Fertilize sparingly on an as-needed and allowed basis. Hand pruning is recommended as needed to maintain size and shape to avoid unsightly scarring of leaves and branches.
Indoor Growing:
This plant can be grown indoors but typically requires substantial modifications to increase light and temperature. It is a frequent choice for Bonsai culture indoors and as a large outdoor garden pot.
Climate:
Clusia rosea 'Nana' is a tropical plant recommended for growing in USDA Zones 9B, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all zones for the longest life and optimum appearance. Note that zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and do not take factors such as humidity, rainfall, or day/night temperature variations into consideration. For this reason, a plant in a drier Zone 10 climate may require more water than one in a humid Zone 10 climate. Every growing environment has unique challenges.
