Begonia Hercules heracleifolia Shade Garden Live Plant Huge Leaf Pink Flower Tropical Indoor Outdoor Starter Size 4 Inch Pot Emerald R

The Hercules Begonia is a favorite in our gardens as it is low maintenance, easy care, but makes a grand artistic statement with clusters of pink to coral shaded flowers reaching high above the body of the plant in the Spring and early Summer.

The common name Hercules is a nod to its large and powerful presence. It has huge star shaped fuzzy leaves that grow to be a 8 to 12 inches across and although it grows short, at a mature height of about 18 to 24 inches, it will develops large 4 to 6 inch diameter beautifully textured stalks over time, so it adds texture and interest to shaded areas year-round. It can also be grown as a large potted plant and can be adapted to grow indoors.

Hercules is an old heirloom Tuberous Begonia that was a South Florida landscape favorite in earlier decades. It was pushed aside years ago by more common Begonias that are better suited for the large chain store seasonal business model. It is not commonly found within the nursery trade any more which is a shame. The few specimens that remained in the shaded gardens of older Palm Beach and Dade County homes and elsewhere are mostly gone now .
