DWARF RADICANS Miniature Gardenia Fragrant White Flower

When it comes to the combination of beauty of fragrance, the Gardenia plant is usually at the top of most lists, and the Dwarf Gardenia or Gardenia radicans is one of the most popular and easiest to grow. It is a frequent choice for foundation plantings and mass plantings in light shade. It is also sometimes commonly called Creeping Gardenia.

The growth habit is low (maturing at only 1 to 2 feet in height) and horizontal (spreading out about 2-3 ft) with small, densely growing, pointed, glossy green, leathery textured leaves.

Few plants are its equal for ease of care and rewarding beauty and fragrance. It is a profuse and reliable bloomer, producing an abundance of small 1-2 inch loosely doubled flowers from late Spring to early Summer, with scattered flowers throughout the year. Radicans is more tolerant of high summer heat than many others, but as a trade off is much less tolerant of cold.

The limbs make beautiful long lasting cut flower arrangements.  The classic, small, but elegant flowers can be used for corsages, boutineeres and bridal bouquets as well.  Additionally they may be grown in pots and brought inside as the bloom begins to open.  Place near a southern window or provide full supplemental full spectrum light for the best and longest bloom indoors.  Return outdoors once bloom is done.

Dwarf Radicans prefers fertile, well drained soil in lightly filtered shade.   For peak performance and bloom it should be maintained uniformly moist, but will withstand periods of drought once well established, though vigor and bloom may suffer.  Take care not to crowd and allow adequate air circulation for the fullest bush.  Some cold protection such as heavy mulch is recommended in all Zones.

.Direct planting of 4 inch starter size plants is not recommended, so for the best results with your new plant, we recommend it be repotted and allowed to grow larger before setting out in a tropical to subtropical landscape.

When the new pot has filled with roots and the plant is larger, then here a few hints for successful growing in the landscape in the recommended zones.  Gardenias can be grown as a potted plants indefinitely, but are notoriously diffcult to maintain indoors full time.

  • Plant in fertile well draining, slightly acidic soil soil in the full sun. Amend with high quality organic material as needed.
  • Locate in full sun to very lightly dappled shade.
  • Provide supplemental irrigation.
  • Feed a good quality, slow release, bloom boosting fertilize with the initial planting and twice yearly in the early Spring and early Fall thereafter.
  • Supplement with a water soluble plant food in between feeding.
  • Prune lightly and often when young to encourage branching and after flowering to promote uniform shape and control size.
  • Plant early in the season in Zones 5, 6, and 7 and mulch heavily.
