Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender' is a hybrid and a vigorous, upright, rounded, bushy perennial shrub that matures at about 2 feet tall with an equal width. It is highly prized for its long-lasting lavender flowers and attractive purple and olive-green foliage. This hybrid (P. saccatus x P. hilliardiae) was introduced in the 1990s by the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden in Cape Town, South Africa, and is protected by U.S. Plant Patent PP13,858.

The leaves are an interesting purplish-green on the top side and eggplant purple on the reverse. The blooms are tall, long-lasting spikes of bright lavender tubes that appear in a continuous cycle from late spring to fall.

Care: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in a location that receives light shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants can develop spots, become weak and thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good-quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer initially and repeat as needed based on the plant's appearance. Prune after flowering to refresh growth, control size, and maintain shape.

Indoor Growing: Mona Lavender can be acclimated to grow indoors if you can provide adequate light, temperature, and humidity. It also makes an excellent porch or patio plant and can be incorporated into tropical shade gardens as a mixed perennial, accent, or bedding plant.

Climate: This is a tropical plant and is recommended for growing outdoors in USDA Zones 9, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and do not consider other factors such as humidity, rainfall, or day/night temperature variations, so every growing environment has unique challenges.

Grower's Note: Some plants in the Plectranthus species are restricted from sale in certain states because they can spread by seed. 'Mona Lavender' is a sterile hybrid, and what little seed it might produce is not typically viable. It is grown from vegetative cuttings and is a cold-tender tropical plant. Plectranthus species generally cannot be shipped to Hawaii.

Condition: This product is one (1) young, starter-sized plant intended for a gardener to grow to its mature size. You may expect a starter-size plant to be well-rooted, have a root zone of approximately 4 inches in diameter, be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall, and have no blooms or buds on arrival. It may be shipped with or without a pot, as appropriate.
