Pachystachys lutea, or Yellow Shrimp Plant, is a tropical flowering perennial with uniquely shaped, bright golden yellow colored blooms that resemble a large shrimp. They are interesting, unique, and always a treat, even if you've seen them before.
Shrimp plants work great in lightly shaded mixed perennial beds, borders, outdoor garden pots, or any other spot where you want a bright pop of color. The long bloom cycle begins in the early spring and continues until early winter in warm climates. The bloom heads take several weeks to mature and remain at their peak for a week or more. They attract hummingbirds and butterflies, make a great nectar source, but are not a preferred host for caterpillars. They lend great interest, texture, and color. They typically have peak bloom cycles in late Spring and early Fall, making great additions to seasonal color pots.
Care: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in light shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed with a good-quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer initially and repeat as needed based on appearance. Prune after flowering to control size and shape.
Indoor Growing: Shrimp plants can be grown as potted plants indefinitely and can be acclimated to grow indoors, but may require modifications to add light and increase temperature to produce blooms.
Climate: Shrimp Plant is a tropical plant and is recommended for growing in USDA Zones 9, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and do not consider factors such as humidity, rainfall, or day/night temperature variations.. Every growing environment has unique challenges. Cold protection is recommended in all zones for the optimum growth and appearance, earliest flowering, and longest life.
