This Red Abutilon is a semi-tropical flowering shrub with large, maple shaped leaves that will reach a mature height of 3 to 5 feet and produces unusual upside down hanging, papery textured flowers, hence the common names of Flowering Maple, Chinese Lantern and Indian Mallow.

Abutilons were once a favorite houseplant in the Victorian period (hence the name Room or Parlor Maple). In recent years they have regained popularity with the introduction of smaller growing and different colored hybrids. This Red, however, is one is not a newer hybrid, as it has been in a forgotten corner of our own collection for many years. We know it simply as Red. The dark, muted, red flowers begin to appear in the early Summer in a long cycle that lasts into Fall.

Uses include mass planting, hedge rows, incorporating into mixed perennial or tiered beds, or growing as a potted plant. It can be grown in full sun, but performs best in light shade. It can be acclimated to grow indoors.
