Aphelandra hartwegiana is a stunning tropical plant that is native to South America. In its native environment, it provides bright pops of color and nectar for pollinators along the edges of dense tropical forests. It adapts to ornamental culture easily and brings the same exotic, tropical feel to the garden.

The showy, long-lasting, bright orange bloom spikes, with contrasting yellow single petals, are present throughout the warm season and grow up to 15 inches in length. Plants mature at an impressive 6-8 ft tall, and are cloaked in large, prominently veined, light green, arched, ovate leaves. They can be used in many interesting ways as feature plants, mass planted for maximum visual impact, used as screens and backgrounds, or grown as large,outdoor potted plants.

Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in a lightly shaded area. Plants will grow in full sun, but perform better in light shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter. Prune after flowering to control size and shape.

Indoor Growing: This tropical plant grows large, requires the full spectrum of indirect light 4 to 6 hours daily, high humidity, and warm temperatures with at least 10°F day/night differential, so it is not well-suited for the average indoor growing space.

Climate: Aphelandra hartwegiana is a tropical plant and is recommended for growing in USDA Zones 9, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and do not take factors such as humidity, rainfall, or day/night temperature variations into consideration. Every growing environment has unique challenges

Condition: This product is one (1) young, starter-sized plant intended for a gardener to grow to its mature size. You may expect a starter-size plant to be well-rooted, have a root zone of approximately 4 inches in diameter, be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall, and have no blooms or buds on arrival. It may be shipped with or without a pot, as appropriate.
