Justicia is a large genus of flowering plants in the Acanthaceae plant family. It holds nearly 1000 accepted species with native ranges throughout tropical to temperate regions of India, Africa, North and South America. Most cultivated species are evergreen, tropical to subtropical perennial plants and shrubs, and are primarily grown for their nectar-rich, bright colored, and often odd or tubular-shaped flowers.

Mexican Honeysuckle (Justicia spicigeria) is a medium-sized, fast, upright-growing tropical shrub that produces large clusters of cheerful, bright, long, pointed, nectar-rich, bright orange flowers that seem to explode from the terminal ends of branches, hence the alternative common name 'Firecracker Bush'.

The sweet nectar and bright color is attractive to hummingbirds and a wide variety of pollinators, making this plant a great addition to any butterfly garden or wildlife habitat area.

This shrub thrives in full sun. Take care not to overwater, as watering too frequently may prevent the plant from blooming. It is moderately drought-tolerant when well-established and will grow in most adequate draining soils.

It can be grown indoors, but may require modifications to provide adequate light, warm temperatures with a day/night differential and increased humidity to produce flowers indoors.

Mexican Honeysuckle is a semi-tropical plant with high heat tolerance and moderate cold tolerance. It can withstand light frost and brief dips below freezing with minimal cosmetic damage. It is recommended for growing outdoors in USDA Zones 8*, 9, 10, 11. However, cold protection will result in a better year-round appearance and earlier flowering.

Condition: This product is one (1) young, starter-sized plant intended for a gardener to grow to its mature size. You may expect a starter-size plant to be well-rooted, have a root zone of approximately 4 inches in diameter, be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall, and have no blooms or buds on arrival. It may be shipped with or without a pot, as appropriate.
