Acalypha hipsida or Giant Chenille Plant produces long strands of unique, fuzzy flowers when it blooms. This species is aptly named chenille because of these flowers that resemble frayed chenille yarn. A versatile plant, Giant Chenille can be trained to display a variety of growth habits. In cooler climates where it does not survive freezing temperatures outdoors, it can be trimmed regularly and grown in a pot to keep size small and manageable when it must be overwintered indoors. Left to its own devices in a tropical climate though, this shrub can reach upwards of 15 feet in height and 8 feet in diameter.

Giant Chenille is a tropical beauty and will produce its peculiar red flowers year round. To encourage prolific blooming, blooms can be trimmed as they begin to brown and fade. Chenille plants are dioecious, meaning that this species produces independent male and female plants. The plants that produce such beautiful furry flowers are the females of the species.
