BLACK AND BLUE Salvia Sage Hummingbird Butterfly Plant

11 reward points

Saliva guarantitica or Black and Blue Salvia is an attractive, unusual, semi-tropical, flowering perennial that is very attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. Other common names are Brazilian, Sapphire, or Anise Scented Salvia or Sage.

It matures at about 3 to 4 feet tall, with soft, herbaceous stems that harden into a woody base as the plant ages, with soft, shiny, pointed, elliptical oval leaves with bluntly serrated edges, and prominent veins in medium toned green. In mid-summer unusually bright cobalt, sapphire blue colored, dual lipped tubules begin to emerge from dark, nearly black calyxes along tall, thin black stems, that rise slightly above the main body of the plant.

This plants absolutely sets to rest the myth that hummingbirds prefer red flowers, as the nectar rich tubules of the Black and Blue Salvia are attractive to butterflies and literal hummingbird magnets, a must have for every Hummingbird and Butterfly Garden and a versatile, eye catching addition to any garden space.

Uses include planting en masse, in a hedge row, incorporating into mixed perennial or tiered beds, or growing as a potted plant. It will grow in full sun, but performs best in light shade.
