Acca or Fejoa sellowianna or Pineapple Guava is a large, somewhat slow-growing, tree-like shrub. It is often used as a foundation planting for soft, leathery green and silver foliage. It can grow as much as 15 feet tall if left unpruned, but is generally grown as a boxed hedge or as a large, rounded accent shrub. Attractive and unusual, small, pretty white flowers with purple edges and showy bright red center tufts of pollen-tipped stamens that are attractive to pollinators appear in the late spring, followed by a small, oval, egg-shaped green edible fruit, if pollinated.
Fruits have a thick, granular, white flesh and a fruity taste similar to pineapples and guavas. Pineapple Guavas may be eaten as fresh fruit, used for tea, jelly, and other fruit-based dishes.
Fruiting is better in cooler climates where there is at least 50 to 60 hours of chilling and is more likely to set if there are other plants of the species nearby.
Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in full sun. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants will become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter. Prune after fruiting to control size, shape, and remove any unwanted fruit.
Indoor Growing: This plant eventually grows large, requires the full spectrum of light 4 to 6 hours daily, high humidity, warm temperatures, and a chilling period in winter to produce flowers. So so well-suited for the average indoor growing space.
Climate: Pinapple Guava is moderately cold-tolerant and recommended for USDA Growing Zones 7, 8 and 9.
