Murraya paniculata or Mock Orange is a large, upright growing semi-tropical, flowering shrub that will mature at a height of around 8 feet to 10 feet. It is also known as the China Box and is, in reality, neither a jasmine nor an orange. It is a very distant citrus relative and belongs to the Rutaceae or Rue family. The fragrant flowers are similar in appearance and fragrance to orange blossoms, are pure white and stand out in sharp contrast against the evergreen dark green, thick, glossy, leaves, which are made of three to nine leaflets.

The Mock Orange flowers at intervals throughout the late spring until early fall, and produces fragrant citrus/jasmine scented flowers and a striking bright orange to red, non edible fruit. This cultivar is generally propagated from soft wood cuttings. Although seed will sprout, they may not be true to the parent plants.

It makes an outstanding boxwood like hedge or decorative potted plant due to its compact habit and dense glossy green foliage. It makes a lovely small tree for the patio. If a standard tree form is desired, select the best and straightest stem and prune all others away. Stake, and allow it to grow straight up until the desired height is achieved. Then prune across the terminal stalk and allow branching and the formation of the canopy to begin. Continue pruning each new branch about 2 inch from the terminal end, building the canopy outward for thickness and density.

The Murraya is believed to have several medicinal properties. The Indians have traditionally used its bark for making cosmetics and the leaves as a stimulant and decongestant. The shrub’s stringent quality has also been used to treat bleeding wounds and dysentery, joint pain, and body ache. In many parts of Asia, the twigs are chewed and used as a natural toothbrush. The fragrance alone is wonderful aroma therapy, and, while we can recommend that highly as a treatment for stress relief, our general recommendation is to consider all ornamental plants as toxic.

The plant is found from India and China thorough South East Asia to Malaysia and Northern Australia. Its alluring fragrance has caused it to be cultivated throughout the tropics and sub-tropics. It is called China Box because it can take shearing and is often used in hedges and lends itself well to formal manicured gardens as well as casual settings.

Direct planting of 4 inch starter size plants is not generally recommended, so for the best results with your new Orange Jasmine Plant, it should be repotted into a larger pot and allowed to grow larger before setting it out in the landscape in Zones 9, 10, 11.

When your new plant has filled it's new pot with roots and has grown large enough to be planted, here are a few general guidelines:

  • Plant early in the season in Zone 9
  • Plant in loose fertile soil
  • Locate in full sun or very light shade
  • Apply a good quality slow release fertilize according to the label directions when first planting and in the Spring and Fall thereafter.
  • Prune for shape after flowering. Avoid pruning in the winter.
  • Protect from frost and freeze.
  • Monitor for symptoms of pests or disease and treat promptly if needed.
