Jasminum sambac, commonly known as Arabian jasmine or Sambac jasmine, is a species of jasmine native to tropical Asia and India that is prized and cultivated throughout the world for its intensely sweet-scented flowers. There are many different cultivars and hybrids that vary by leaf shape, flower size and shape, blooming cycle, and fragrance intensity.

The Little Duke of Tuscany is an old cultivar that was pushed from the market by newer introductions a few decades ago and recently rediscovered. It has many desirable qualities, including a compact upright to somewhat vine-like habit and very attractive, dense, shiny dark green, rounded oval foliage. Although the flowers are slightly smaller than its namesake, Grand Duke of Tuscany, it is a more vigorous grower, a more prolific, reliable bloomer, and less fussy and temperamental than Grand Duke.

The flowers are the classic, densely doubled rose or camelia-like form with the same heavenly fragrance that double Sambacs are renowned for. The best location for it is one that receives full but cool sunlight in the mornings and is lightly sheltered from the direct sun in the afternoons.

Little Duke Jasmine can also be adapted to grow indoors as a houseplant, but it may require supplemental lighting to flower. It makes a wonderful commemorative gift and is a great choice for experienced as well as new gardeners.
