MIAMI SUPREME Gardenia Own Root Fragrant Heirloom Plant

$13.50

14 reward points

The Miami Supreme Gardenia is old Gardenia cultivar, that has perhaps the largest and most fragrant flowers of all the common Gardenias.  It is certainly among the most popular and best loved of the species.

Large doubled blooms begin to appear en mass in the late spring to early summer, depending on climate.  Fat buds grace almost every limb on a large, vigorous growing plants with dense, dark green foliage, and continue for several weeks to months.

The Miami Supreme Gardenia will mature at about 3 to 4 feet tall and just as wide, if left to it's own devices. However, it is easily maintained by frequent pruning after it flowers, and so is also a good choice for potted culture.  However, it is important to note;  Gardenias are notoriously difficult to grow indoors, so when grown as potted plants they are best grown outdoors and brought inside while blooming and then returned to the outdoors when the bloom cycle is over.

It is less cold tolerant than many others, and is often grafted to nematode resistant root stock to improve it's longevity in the tropical Zones.

When in flower, the limbs make beautiful long lasting cut flower arrangements.  The classic, elegant flowers are excellent choices for corsages and bridal bouquets as well.

This garden is a great gift choice for a gardener of any skill level, and is a frequent choice for Mother's Day, Weddings, and House Warming Gifts.

Direct planting of 4 inch starter size plants is not recommended, so for the best results with your new plant, we recommend it be repotted and allowed to grow larger before setting out in a tropical to subtropical landscape.

When the new pot has filled with roots and the plant is larger, then here a few hints for successful growing in the landscape in the recommended zones.  Gardenias can be grown as a potted plants indefinitely, but are best grown outdoors.

  • Plant in fertile well draining, slightly acidic soil soil in the full sun. Amend with high quality organic material as needed.
  • Locate in full sun to lightly dappled shade.  Foliage will be larger, greener and glossier when grown in light shade.
  • Provide supplemental irrigation.
  • Feed a good quality, slow release, bloom boosting fertilize with the initial planting and twice yearly in the early Spring and early Fall thereafter.
  • Supplement with a water soluble plant food in between feeding.
  • Prune lightly and often when young to encourage branching and after flowering to promote uniform shape and control size.
  • Check for signs of disease, pest or nutritional issues often and treat promptly and appropriately.
  • Plant early in the season in Zones 8 and 9A and mulch heavily ahead of the first frost.
