The Plinia cauliflora (synonym Myrciaria cauliflora) or Jaboticaba (alternate spelling Jabuticaba) is a large but slow-growing flowering, fruit-bearing tree native to Brazil with many interesting and unique characteristics. Unusual white flowers resembling small cauliflower heads emerge directly from branches and the main trunk in the late spring, followed by a round, dark purple grape-like edible fruit. In the areas it's native to, the common name Jaboticaba (also spelled Jabuticaba) refers to the fruit. It will grow large eventually and can potentially reach a mature height of 30 to 40 feet in a tropical to semi-tropical climate.
The Jaboticaba Fruit has thick skin and sweet, rosy pink to white inner flesh, which is the capsule for medium-sized seeds in groups of 2 to 4 per fruit. The fruit is frequently used for jelly, jam, juice, and wine. These trees are typically grown from the seeds, but seeds must be fresh and cannot be successfully stored as the germination declines rapidly after seeds are harvested and cleaned.
It grows slowly, has an attractive trunk and bark similar to guava trees, and has a fine, fibrous root system, making it well-suited for large garden pots and Bonsai culture.
It is reasonably carefree, requiring little more than attention to watering, regular feeding, and pruning for shape while it is young and becoming established. Mature trees are moderately drought-tolerant. It can be successfully grown in most soils except dense, poorly draining types, but prefers coarse, well-draining, slightly acidic soils. It will grow in light shade, but take care, and plan for eventual size when planting near other trees.
