Acca or Fejoa sellowianna or Pineapple Guava is a large, somewhat slow growing evergreen tree-like shrub.
It bears an edible oval egg to pear shaped green fruit about 2-31/2 inches long with thick granular white flesh that somewhat like a combination of pineapple and guava, with a slight minty under flavor. The seeds are small. Fruiting season can vary slightly according to climate, but is generally late spring to early/mid summer.
Pineapple Guavas are mainly eaten as a fresh fruit, but you can find a number or recipes online for jelly, tea and pudding. This species will eventually reach heights of 15 to 20 feet if left unpruned, but it is generally grown as a boxed hedge or as a large rounded tree-like shrub.
It can be used as a foundation planting and is primarily grown in Florida for its attractive foliage which is a soft green leathery texture on top with a very pretty silvery reverse that can be seen when the wind moves them around.
Fruiting is better in cooler climates where there is a least 50 to 60 hours of chilling. The plant is considered to be hardy to about 15ยบ F. An attractive somewhat unusual flower precedes the fruit in mid summer.
The flowers are about an 1 to 2 inches in diameter sometimes appearing in clusters. They have very long bright red stamens topped with bright yellow pollen grains. The flowers are white, with an very pretty red purple interior lining of the petal. The petals are also edible and make nice garnish for salads, etc. The flowers are attractive to butterflies and birds, who will eat them and thereby pollinate the fruit. The flowers attract butterflies to feed, but the plant is not a host (no caterpillars). If fruiting is desired, two plants should be purchased and planted near each other for cross pollination.
Condition: One (1) well-rooted, starter-size plant with an approximate 4-inch-diameter root zone. Plant will be a minimum of about 6 to 12 inches tall and have no blooms or buds on arrival.
