Spondia purpurea or Spanish Plum is native to Central and South America and goes by many names regionally including Ciruela and Jocote. Contrary to its common names which translate to plum, Ciruelo is not actually a plum at all. This plant belongs to the cashew family which contains other fruits like mangoes. This fruit tree can be grown in tropical climates to reach over 20 feet in height.

The tangy, slightly sour fruits of Spanish Plum are far from all this tree has to offer. During the growing season, Spanish Plum will be covered with attractive, oval shaped leaves. When Winter arrives, Ciruelo loses all or most of its leaves and is covered in clusters of small bright red flowers that rest along the stems. Fruits begin as green and slowly mature through shades of yellow before turning bright red, indicating ripeness. Spanish Plum is eaten in a variety of forms throughout the Tropical Americas, but it is most noted that the fruits can be eaten raw.
