Acalypha wilkesiana 'Firestorm' - Copperleaf / Jacob's Coat

Introduce a blaze of color to your garden with 'Firestorm' Copperleaf, a vibrant Acalypha wilkesiana cultivar. This fast-growing ornamental shrub is prized for its intensely variegated, fire-colored foliage, offering a dynamic display that rivals many flowering plants. Native to the Pacific Islands, A. wilkesiana (also known as Jacob's Coat, Beefsteak Plant, or Match-Me-If-You-Can) is now cultivated worldwide. Historically, it was often classified as a subspecies of Acalypha amentacea, though some current botanical views consider it a distinct species.

'Firestorm' features striking, long, narrow leaves with sharply pointed, deeply serrated, and slightly ruffled edges, adding textural interest. Born on tender, semi-woody stems, immature leaves start olive-green, progressing to orange and bronze tones with a high-contrast peach to pink zig-zag margin. As leaves mature, colors deepen to fiery bronze-red and orange hues. Leaf color intensity and contrast are directly dependent on high light levels.

Like all Copperleaf plants, 'Firestorm' produces tiny, tan flowers along thin, fuzzy stems at branch tips. These add texture but are unremarkable, as the plant is grown primarily for its magnificent foliage. 'Firestorm' typically reaches 3-5 feet tall and wide, though it can grow up to 8 feet if unpruned. Its compact, bushy habit makes it versatile for tropical/subtropical landscapes: mass-planted as hedges, incorporated into mixed beds, used as stand-alone specimens, or grown as a potted plant or houseplant in high light.

Cultivation & Care:

Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade; best color in full sun.

Water: Prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil. Avoid complete drying.

Hardiness: Tropical evergreen, winter hardy in USDA Zones 10-11. Grow as an annual or houseplant in cooler zones.

Pruning: Pinch or prune to encourage bushiness and maintain size.
