STOPLIGHT Croton Plant Tropical Heirloom Red Yellow Green

13 reward points

Stoplight is an old, heirloom croton that has been rapidly disappearing from the chain store garden centers over the last 10 years.

The best features of the Stoplight Croton are likely the reasons it has passed over and forgotten as growers shifted their focus to cheaper mass production.  It grows more slowly than others that were retained in commercial production, such as Petra and Dwarf Corkscrew, and has a more open and less self branching habit.  These are differences that would mean little to the average gardener, but can be critical important factors in scheduled, commercial market timing.

Stoplight Croton has very long, finger like leaves that need time to mature and age for their full color range to become prominent.   The base color of the leaves is predominately a deep, almost black burgundy.  As the leaf ages and matures the veins begin to show a lighter orange red and the new growth emerges with shades of bright yellow, with intermediate growth in bright red and green, hence the common name Stoplight.

The Stoplight Croton has many versatile landscape uses; it's a star at brightening up a somewhat shaded nook or corner, a great plant delinating transition points in large beds, for layering in mixed beds to create shade for other smaller plants, or it can be maintained at a lower height as a hedge or mass planting, or is well adapted to full time, permanent potted culture.
