Double Delite results from a naturally occurring spontaneous genetic mutation from an old heirloom Tropical Hibiscus Hybrid known only as Andersons Number 10. These spontaneous mutations in the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis species are called 'Sports.' Sports that appear to have better or markedly different characteristics from the parent plant are selected for cultivation and trialed to see if the traits remain true and can be reproduced.
In the case of Double Delite, the flowers are the same dense and fully doubled form, modestly larger with a more saturated color. The most significant improvement is that the plant has a stronger and more resilient root system and can better metabolize iron and magnesium, so it is not as prone to chlorosis as Anderson Number 10 is and is overall healthier, more robust, easier to maintain, and typically lives much longer.
The plant has a sturdy upright growth habit, matures about 3. if left unpruned, grows well on its own roots, and is a reliable and prolific bloomer. Fat buds are born at or near the terminal ends of dense branches clad in medium-sized, glossy green, pointed, oval leaves with sharply serrated edges.
It can be grown successfully and planted in the ground in a tropical to sub-tropical landscape when protection from temperatures below freezing can be provided, and it can be used in many versatile ways. It makes a great flowering hedge, mass statement planting, transition points in mixed beds, focal feature, or can be grown as a large potted plant.
