Zamia furfuracea or Cardboard Palm is an evolutionary relic of the Cycad family. This species has been around since dinosaurs ruled the Earth and provides a tropical prehistoric feeling atmosphere to many landscapes. The large, dark green, leather textured triangular shaped leaflets appear in pairs along a stiff central frond. While these plants do not produce a noticeable bloom, the stalk from which they bear fruit is very showy and beautiful. Cardboard Palm seed stalks are a brilliant shade of red in sharp contrast to brown pod that encases them. Pods open slowly and last for several months, and make great accent or transition points and backgrounds for more colorful flowering landscape elements. Seeds do not germinate easily, so it is not invasive and does not spread beyond the intended planting zone.
Cardboard Palm was named the 2007 Florida Plant of the Year by the Florida Nursery Growers & Landscape Association (FNGLA) because it is so easy to grow, require little maintenance and are very drought tolerant once well established. . These cycads adapt well to potted conditions when placed in an area with plenty of light and are not overwatered. Despite their tropical appearance, they are moderately cold-tolerant, can withstand short duration temps in the mid 20's with only moderate burn to the leaf fronds.
The growth habit of the Cardboard Palm is a low and very slow growing rounded mound. Although they will eventually become large at 3-5 feet in height with a spread of 5 to 6 feet, they grow very slowly and take many years to reach that size.
