Gmelina philippensis is a tropical flowering tree-like shrub commonly known as Parrot's Beak that is native to the Philippines. The name "Parrot's Beak" comes from its uniquely shaped flowers, which resemble the beak of a parrot. The showy flowers are borne along a thick pendulous stalk and emerge in opposing pairs from large, tube-like green bracts.

It matures as a large, somewhat open-growing, tree-like shrub growing as much as 15 ft tall over time, with long drooping branches cloaked in pairs of dark green leaves with an odd, rounded diamond shape. Bloom stalks hang in long chains from the terminal ends of the branches, providing a striking, tropical, exotic appearance.

It is a frequent choice for Bonsai culture due to its unique characteristics. Interestingly, it is commonly formed into a Shohin Bonsai which means 'small thing'. Shohin Bonsais are often under 10 inches tall. In a typical landscape though, Parrot's Beak will extend long, arching limbs until they are clipped. To encourage a compact growth pattern, many growers cut the long, arching limbs near the center of the shrub.

Care: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in very light shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter. Prune limbs close to the plant while young and becoming established to build fuller interior and produce a larger number of bloom stalks.

Indoor Growing: Due to size and specialized growing requirements this plant is recommended for indoor growing experienced growers.

Climate: is a tropical plant and is recommended for growing in USDA Zones 9, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and do not take factors such as humidity, rainfall, or day/night temperature variations into consideration. Every growing environment has unique challenges

Condition: This product is one (1) young, starter-sized plant intended for a gardener to grow to its mature size. You may expect a starter-size plant to be well-rooted, have a root zone of approximately 4 inches in diameter, be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall, and have no blooms or buds on arrival. It may be shipped with or without a pot, as appropriate.
