Firebush Scarlet Live Plant Shrub Hamelia patens Florida Native Orange Red Flowers Attract Hummingbirds Starter Sz 4 Inch Pot

Scarlet Firebush (Hamelia patens) is a large, semi-tropical shrub native to the tropical and subtropical Americas. This indigenous plant produces profuse, showy scarlet to red-orange tubular flowers, rich in nectar, that attract hummingbirds and diverse pollinators, directly supporting local wildlife and ecosystems.

Firebush is low-maintenance, adapting to varied soils. It's an excellent choice for environmentally conscious gardeners, pollinator gardens, and wildlife habitats, offering season-long color comparable to exotics while contributing to regional ecological health. Its rapid growth makes it ideal for boundary plantings, screens, backgrounds, or stand-alone accents; it also thrives in large outdoor pots.

The long bloom cycle runs from late spring/early summer through fall. As the summer ends, growth slows; leaves start showing dark speckles and splotches , change color, and eventually fall by midwinter. This is a normal cycle that is often mistaken for a plant health issue. The species enters resting phase in all climates that can range from semi-dormancy where some foliage remains, to full dormancy where limbs become completely bare.

Firebush thrives in full sun; light shade results in leggy growth and fewer, less colorful blooms. Recommended for USDA Zones 8-10. For indoor overwintering, ensure well-lit, above-freezing locations and avoid overwatering.
